Warning signs of dyslexia throughout the life cycle
In preschool
- A close relative with dyslexia
- Delayed speech
- Mixing up sounds and/or syllables in long words
- Chronic ear infections
- Severe reactions to childhood illnesses
- Getting left versus right mixed up
- Late in establishing a dominant hand
- Difficulty learning to tie shoes
- Trouble memorizing their address, phone number, or the alphabet
- Can’t create rhyming words
In elementary school
- Slow, non-automatic handwriting that is difficult to read
- Letter or number reversals continuing past 1st grade
- Difficulty learning cursive writing-Refusing to use cursive writing
- Reading that is slow, choppy, and inaccurate.
- Guesses words based on shape or context
- Skips or misreads prepositions such as at, to, of.
- Ignores suffixes
- Cannot sound out unknown words
- Terrible spelling skills
- Often can’t remember sight words such as they, were, Mrs., etc. or homonyms,
such as their, there, they’re
- Difficulty telling time on a clock with hands
- Trouble with math
- Memorizing multiplication facts
- Remembering the sequence of steps
- Directionality difficulties
- When speaking, difficulty finding the correct word
- Lots of “uhs” or “ums’
- Common sayings come out slightly twisted
- Extremely messy backpack or bedroom
- May dread going to school
- Lots of complaints of stomach aches or headaches
- May have nightmares about school
In high school
All of the symptoms mentioned above plus:
- Limited vocabulary
- Extremely poor written expression
- Poor reading fluency
- Large discrepancy between verbal skills and written composition
- Unable to master a foreign language
- Difficulty reading printed music
- Poor grades in several classes
In adults
Educational History similar to above, plus:
- Slow reader
- May have to read a page several times in order to understand it
- Terrible speller
- Difficulty putting thoughts down on paper
- Dreads writing letters or memos
- Left versus right is still not automatic
- Often gets lost, even in a familiar city
- When tires or sick, continues to confuse the letters b and d.
